Chiropractic Manipulation Therapy (CMT)

There is a substantial amount of research indicating the many benefits of Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy (CMT) for neuromusculoskeletal problems. CMT consists of passive maneuvers in which specifically directed manual forces are applied to the vertebral and extra vertebral articulations of the body, with the objective of restoring mobility to restricted areas and/or restoring alignment. Chiropractic manipulation (aka adjustments) can be very effective in restoring joint function, mobility, and alignment which leads to improved range of motion and reduced pain. Dr. Hartje primarily utilizes the following CMT adjusting techniques:

  • Diversified (HVLA):

This traditional method uses a quick, precise thrust to target spinal joints and is considered the most common chiropractic technique for pain relief across a wide range of conditions.

  • Cox Technique:

Primarily used for spinal pain, particularly sciatica, this technique involves a specialized table with adjustments applied along the spine to address nerve irritation.

  • Thompson (Drop Table):

This technique utilizes a drop table that allows specific sections to fall slightly during an adjustment, making it potentially gentler for sensitive patients.

  • Activator Method:

This method uses a handheld instrument to deliver a low-force impulse, making it suitable for patients with sensitive joints or chronic pain.

Key points to remember:

  • No single technique is “best” for everyone:

The most effective chiropractic technique will depend on the patient’s individual needs, pain location, and condition severity. Always discuss your specific needs and medical history with Dr. Hartje to determine the most appropriate treatment approach.
